Brown Memorial's 150th Anniversary Concert

  • Brown Memorial Park Avenue Presbyterian Church (map)

The choirs of Brown Memorial Park Avenue Presbyterian and Beth El Congregation will present Leonard Bernstein's "Chichester Psalms" for the final Tiffany Series concert of the 2018-2019 season. This concert celebrates Brown Memorial’s 150th Anniversary.

Bernstein composed the “Chichester Psalms” following his Third Symphony, “Kaddish,” written in 1963 in memory of President John Kennedy. Both pieces combine choruses singing Hebrew text. However, while “Kaddish” is a statement of anguish and despair, the very accessible “Chichester Psalms” is hopeful and life-affirming. By combining the Hebrew with Christian choral tradition, Bernstein was implicitly issuing a plea for peace in Israel during a turbulent time in that young country’s history.  The choirs will also premiere a new composition by Beth El Cantor Thom King.

Tickets are $20 and available online and at the door. Students get free admission. We also offer Patron ($50) tickets as a way for you to help the Tiffany Series continue to provide quality concerts and speakers.
