J. Spencer Hammond, former longtime minister of music, organist and choir director at Douglas Memorial Community Church also taught music in the city public schools for more than three decades, passed away on January 24, 2019.

The mission of the American Guild of Organists (AGO) is to enrich lives through organ and choral music. The Baltimore Chapter of the AGO has 200 members, ranging from professional musicians to lovers of organ music, who are dedicated to excellence and education.

One aspect of the chapter's educational outreach is an Organ Scholars program. In this program the chapter pays half of the cost of lessons for a young student for a year, provides them with organ shoes, and a one-year membership to the AGO, which includes the monthly periodical The American Organist. Memorial donations will go towards this scholarship program, which is made possible through an endowed fund so that it can have a long sustainability.
