John and I first met when he began his studies in Organ at the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia- - about 1954. He was a brilliant student and worked diligently each day to prepare his lesson. His innate talent was impressive, and his energy was boundless. He was so enthusiastic about playing the organ.

Each week the small class of six or seven students would meet on a Wednesday afternoon to play our assignments for one another. One of John’s signature pieces when he later concertized was the Reubke Sonata on the 94th  Psalm. I have probably heard him play this a dozen or more times in the organ class and in public concerts. .His playing was stunning and exciting. I don’t remember ever hearing him make a mistake.

It is little wonder that he was named to succeed his teacher as head of the organ department at Curtis - - Dr. Alexander McCurdy. At the same time John was head of the organ department at The Julliard School of Music and organist at Madison Avenue Presbyterian Church in New York City. What an accomplishment.

In the course of his career, he mentored and prepared many of today’s fine organists who themselves have continued the tradition of excellence.

John passed away on 1 February 2021.
